Preliminary Task

Preliminary Task

1      Preliminary

In our preliminary task we had problems filming with it because we lost the video for it. We also had a problems with the last one because the sound was not working correctly and the lighting.

Evaluation Question 7: What I've learned since the preliminary task

Camera Work:

From looking at my final piece and my preliminary piece i can clearly tell that i have used more camera angles to break up a shot. I can say with the camera i have learned new skills with it. In the final product of mine there are many shots such as over the shoulder shots, long shots, point of view shots, close ups, tracking shots and more. The use of more camera angles makes my thriller opening look more thrilling. Below there is a mood board  about both of my final and preliminary products with different camera angles used in the thrillers.

Technologies:

I have learned many technologies since the preliminary task. I have learned how to use editing softwares like adobe premiere, iMovie, after effects and photo shop. I used Imovie to edit my preliminary task. This editing software was very hard to use. We had use adobe for our thriller opening which was much easier. We had a scene were we had CCTV footage we used after effects for it. To create our ident we had used PhotoShop. I can clearly see that i have learnt many editing scenes since my preliminary task.

Narrative:

We have had a more intelligent feel rather than a basic one in terms of narrative. Our preliminary task had a basic narrative as we had two men passing a file between themselves while they are both investigating each other. In our thriller opening it looks similar but it in this one its more professional and intelligent. There is a meeting between two Mysterious characters in a very unpleasant location, between the two characters they are in a quiet area and they start to talk to one another and then they pass around a parcel which looks very mysterious just like the file, but at the same time they are being observed by a third character that no one knows about yet. The third character is a investigator (a detective) he is watching over the two characters similar to our preliminary task. The detective is doing this work alone and so far everything is going well. He's then attacked and murdered in his own office. This is very different to our preliminary task. The investigation is about a possible terrorist attack. i think that the narrative has increased to a more exciting thrilling level.

Costume, Props and Setting:

The costumes, props and setting compared to our preliminary task is way better. We used a simple folder in our preliminary task as a prop that was all. In our final piece we used Parcels cars, news articles, computers and images. The costumes met the characters profiles as the evil doers wore hoodies and the good guy wore a shirt and tie. We used tattoos for the two evil doers as costumes to represent their organisation. We moved settings to outside school. We filmed out side school and in a office.

Evaluation Question 6: What Have I learned about Technologies From the process of constructing this product.

Adobe:

Adobe premiere is new to me as i have never used it or knew that you could use it to edit your films like other softwares. This is the first time i have ever used it because i have never used in it GSCE level work. I think adobe premiere is one of the best editing programmes because its easy to use. I would use adobe more often because its simpler to windows live movie maker.

After Effets:

I used the new software technology named adobe after effects which was really helpful for my thriller opening. We had done a footage of the 2 men meeting from far rang i had taken a simple long shoot to make it look like it a CCTV footage. To make it look like a CCTV footage i uploaded the footage on to after effects and then i added manny timecodes and filters. I looked at a youtube tutorial as this was the first time i used the software. It took a while to find a person on youtube who done it step by step and pausing at the same time made it useful so it made it easier to accomplish. I think that adobe after affects has given me a new trait even though i'm not use to it.

PhotoShop:

Photoshop was used when we was creating our ident. i learned this by waching claire who was colour editing a image and even scale and add test to it. This is not new technology to as i have used it before but i never knew how to use it properly.

iMovie

We used iMovie when we was editing our preliminary task. I that iMovie was harder to use than other softwares. It was hard to export it but i found it easy to edit it. I would use other editing softwares but i feel that i have gained a new skill.

Blogger:

I had never known about blogger but at the start of the course i was introduce to it and found out how its like. Its simple to use and i like the way it displays my work and progress. I think it has a great ability to allow you to put images, videos and powerpoints and others. I have used blogger to display my progress and coursework.

Google:

I have definitely used google to make my coursework. i used google many times to see specific setting and also answer my question. If i did not use google or if google was never here then i would know as much.

Youtube:

Youtube is second nature to me. I have used youtube to show my work for feedback and watch other peoples videos for ideas. I uploaded the rough cut video of our thriller opening so our peer the target audience could view it so we could get feedback on how to improve. I also used youtube to watch past students thriller opening. Its was also very helpful for me because i then learned how to make title sequences and how to use adobe after effects. Youtube has been very useful for the construction for my thriller opening.

Slideshare:

I have learned how to use slideshare as its helped me present my analysis and work. Slideshare has let me upload powerpoint presentation on to my blog.

Digital Camera and Tripod:

I had used this to definitely film my thrillers opening scenes. The Camera that we had used was simple not complicated.

Skills:

By using all these different technologies i think i have acquired many skills. I'm now able to display my pieces, edit pieces together and improve them.the construction of my work wouldn't be possibly if the technologies was not there.

Clip on Microphone:

I had never used or heard of this before. Its a small device that picks up better sound quality from the actor while clipped on to the actor. This piece of technology was used in my preliminary task. I could say that this was a new technology to me. If you use this in one of you work you can tell the difference.

Evaluation Question 4/5: Who would be the audience for my media product and how have i attracted my audience

Who is the targeted audience?
The targeted audience for my media film is the young to elder teens. this is because my film characters are all young and that it is very thrilling as it has some action in the end. a older audience can be attracted as well because my film is also contains terrorism and that it is frequently coming up. my theory is right because in my audience research its tells you and shows you everything that they was interested in. my friends who are aged between 16 to 18 say they would actually go watch it in the cinema despite some negative points. my family and friends also said that they like the way we use the reverse stereotype and narrative in our film. this tells me that they will go watch this in cinema with the good narrative and reverse stereotype that me and my group created. this is good because instead of making a film with a kidnap and shoot out you could have this a inspector going to predict the next terrorist attack and gets killed. we can see how thriller works but it mostly attracts teens who is my targeted audience.

Enigma Codes In My Film
My media product attracts more teens for many reasons. one reason is because we have teenaged characters. the enigma codes that have been included also have a influence on the teens. enigma codes is when you question a audience for example a man opened a door but the scene changes. we used a enigma code for the scene with the tattoo. this make the audience question whats the meaning and why is it so important. this make the teens want to carry on watching. i would know this because my cousin aged 15 asked me whats that symbol (tattoo) on his hand.
Effects In My Film
The use of affects in my film also attracts my targeted audience. we use camera affects to make a CCTV footage look like a we've actually used a CCTV camera footage. it made it look very professional and high tech. this attracts my targeted audience as the audience are youths and youth are most attracted to technology. i had one feed back from a friend(16) saying they like the use of camera effects like the CCTV and another friend saying its very professional i would watch it if it was to be in the cinema. and even the scene where i used my card to bypass the electric gate was also good as it made the film look even better and professional.
Macguffin In My Film
Macguffins also used on the audience. the passing the parcel around helps to set up a narrative. the macguffin was used to show that the two boys was doing business together but also the macguffin was not important to the film. it help to get another shot of the tattoo symbol. macguffins are almost like enigma codes as they both tease and question the audience.
Why Would They Watch My Film
Why else would the audience watch my film as i have already included cliffhanges, myself being strangled, red-herrings (the parcel), special effects, enigma codes (symbolic tattoos), the use of young actor and technology are all parts that mend together to show why would they watch my media piece. they would have been impressed when i had a photo of both Mohibur and Andrew on the wall in my office in the opening scene. i would want the audience to ask what happens next. when i showed my aunty she said the way you want the audience to ask what happens next is very intelligent and smart of you.

My Audience Research
Watching my audience research tells me that our opening will progress to our targets. the soundtrack we have included a gives you a little taste of thrill as it is important to lots of age groups.we have a good amount of characters as it is important. we have the investigator who solves out whens the next terrorist attack and two characters who are known to be terrorist. the characters are also stereo typical as the terrorist ethnicity back can be seen and the detective with the smart and nicely dressed clothing. this adds a piece of realism in the beginning.

Audience Research On The Rough Copy
i i released a rough copy of my film while we was still in the creating stages. it was a very rough cut of the opening in the film. in our target audience we asked certain friends and peers. they gave us a good piece of advice on how to edit better and make it more attractive. we was told to cut some shot so it can maintain a thrilling pace so our audience do not lose their thrill for the film. we was also told to choose think hard about the soundtrack and we was also told to rearrange some shots. we took the advice we was given and edited the film. just by doing this it made the audience enjoy the film even more and made it more attractive to them

Evaluation Question 3:Media Distribution

We created our very own production company named "gateway productions". we had agreed on the name because it goes well with our film name. our film speciality was to create thrilling moment which means a gateway to thrill. its speciality was to bring fear of our hour days which is terrorism.

International and Nationally
In the UK the film industry that would distribute my film would be film4 as it is known for releasing spectacular drama shows and releases great film. in the USA the film industry that would distribute my film is paramount picture.

There are many ways to distribute my film so that i can review it publicly. its a good thing to say that it would be viewed in cinema digitally but its a bit ambitious to say as it is low budget.

To distribute my film i would do it on the internet and social networks because more people watch films on the internet and social networking sites. dreams of a life was a film created by producers they made the film look like a documentary which is why its classed as both. a game site was created which gained popularity from the gaming population that is so hard audience to catch. it was a good way to get interest as its a low budget film. it will be great to distribute our film this way because we will be having both gamers and film watchers interested in the film.

Internet
By watching my audience research i noticed that the best way to distribute my film is by using the internet and social networking as it is a big audience. that means that using a internet web link like youtube will help a lot because many people go on youtube to watch random videos.

Social networking
It can be done on the following below

  • Youtube
  • Tumblr
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Blogger

DVD
There also is another way of viewing our film to a audience. we could use DVD's because its less money to pay than the cinema and you would not have to go out and watch the film. another reason why is that the film is low budget and we will struggle to pay for the advitisement.

Opening Title Analysis

We decided to name our film '20/2/2014'. We decided our film title to named as a date because it will show the importance of date. The film is about a terrorist attack that is going to occur, the only question is when. In the opening we witness the detective coming close to allocating a date. He gets angry and throws his pen out of frustration. The pen knocks down an article about the 9/11 attack. From this he works out a new date, a date in connection. 9+11=20. The 20th of February. We would have liked a more simple date like the 9/11 but due to time of completion it would not make sense. We chose to use this as a title as it portrays importance and is very simple. Terrorist attacks themself are very important and so a simple title makes sense.

Audience Research

To see what some of peers of the peer’s interest in a thriller we have created a short interview. In terms of understanding what our peers would like to see in a Thriller we conducted a very short interview. Here is a very short video of a select few of these interviews. I have also carried out a questionnaire, I will put up the findings in a table to make it clearer. The recorded interviews show that in actual fact every one has a different opinion of film in terms of my age group. The interviews were interesting to understand different peoples opinion. We can see that the title is not important to everyone as well as camera angles and so on. Really they did not inform us of what to include of our Thriller opening but more so that everyone's taste in film is different and that some people notice things such as camera shots more than others.

Questionnaire

This is the questionnaire I designed for my family and peers. I asked 5 of each age group (16-18, 19-30, 31+) Of different genders.

Media questionnaire

Before creating a Thriller opening for my media coursework AS level it would be helpful to receive feedback on what audience preferences. This questionnaire is optional however I would be very grateful for any feedback, many thanks.

From these findings I can keep them in mind when creating my Thriller opening. Due to stereotypes I feel that our idea is best suited to teenagers and maybe males. We aim to create a thrilling and explosive movie. Our opening will be of a Terrorist attack so explosions and fights etc are to be expected later on in the movie.
