Mise En Scene

The term/definition mise-en-scene is a French word thats means everything within the scene or frame.  The mise-en-scene includes:

  • Settings and props
  • Costume, hair and makeup
  • Facial expression and body language
  • Lighting and colour
  • Position/location within the frame.

When filming a scene everything within that scene is thought about very carefully. For example in a horror film you would have an old damped dark setting, weapons, cloaks, strong and weak body language, low lighting and dark colours. All parts of mise-en-scene but also all specific type of the genres have clearly been selected carefully, the mise-en-scene has been carefully created to fit to the genre and narrative. Below I have created a mood board of some things that could be found in the mise-en-scene in terms of the Thriller genre.
