Psycho

Psycho

Title: Psycho
Year: 1960
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Starring actors: Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins

Brief Narrative:

Psycho is a Thriller movie directed by the famous Alfred Hitchcock. The narrative is about a young woman named Janet who has a financial problem. After being sent home early due to being ill she was asked to leave some deposit for her company. Janet saw this as a great opportunity to support herself with the money. This is when the audience take it on point they see this women as a women on the run. But when she decides to have a night over at he bates motel the point begins to turnover within a half-hour. She is the killed, which had us clueless for the rest of the film because the narrative told us she is on the run. This makes us clueless as the audience. The rest of the movie is about the discovery of Janet’s death.

I think that watching this film on a GCSE as well as a level made me feel that there is a big insight of what creates a great thriller. The film is well known for a number of reasons. For starters it had changed the whole knowledge of the thriller completely. Instead of the killer birds and aliens it was an actually human which began a new fear within people. The movie showed how vulnerable people are when going to shower. The music created when Janet was getting stabbed was very thrilling. It’s known by everyone because its been used in many productions. For example Family Guy. And the shower scene has been created many times with a shot of blood going down the drain.

The film Psycho also demonstrates how important camera angles are when filming. For example when Alfred Hitchcock had shown his first production to the censors their reaction was fantastic. They had refused to release the film on many attempts. A small reason when a toilet was flushed. Another reason because of how bad Mrs. Leigh’s murder was. The censors had commented that they had seen a knife cut through her skin and had seen to many wounds on her body and too much blood but Alfred was quick to defend his film by saying you do not see a knife cut through her skin it’s the use of the smart camera angles that makes the audience believe that the knife is cutting through her skin. So that means his film did not imply to upset the censors. His use of camera angles in the film can create the possibility of Hitchcock himself. I think that his work towards this film has changed the ideas of thriller up until this point I like that. To use camera angles like Alfred Hitchcock one do will be amazing.
