North by North West is an American spy thriller movie written by Ernest Lehman, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and features Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James mason.

The plot or the film features an innocent man who is chased throughout the film by agents from an unknown organisation because of a mistaken Identity.

The Trailer

The trailer would have interest the audience for many reasons such as

North by Northwest gives the audience emotion through parts like suspense and tension that cause the feel of excitement, anxiety, surprise and terror.

The Thriller Genre

North by north show the truth as the main character has to work against the organisation to stop them from forcing our microfilm which has government information.

Hitchcock said thrillers allow the audience, "to put their toe in the cold water of fear to see what it's like”

Alfred Hitchcock successfully completed his speech as within the film there was kidnapping, chase scenes and crop duster scenes.

 

Thriller Devices

 “Devices such as suspense, red herrings cliff-hangers, and are used briefly.”

North by Northwest includes all of these devices.

In particular there are many red herrings.

The shady mysterious character George Kaplan that Robert thornhill is misunderstood for is a red herring as he never really existed. He was a confusion which was planned successfully to distract the protagonist attention from the real agent.

Also, the female is a massive red herring. Because in the start we believed that Eve Kendall is a women Robert Thornhill is attracted to. Then we find out that she is working for the protagonist. Then we find out she is the real government agent.

The Crop Duster Scene

In this specific scene Robert is chased by a crop duster which is trying to kill him. In this scene he has to save himself from the chemicals and the bullets the crop dusters aiming at him.

The scene stands out the most because of the series of shots and camera angels used within. The different angles in the scene we see the plane and Roberts expressions and body language. The audience are filled with anxiety because the suspense was created the audience are wondering where is the plane and how it’s going to attack. The audience experience many emotions as they were relief that Robert escaped the planes attacks and even when the bullets and chemicals was thrown at him.
