Thriller Recipe


Thriller is a very huge genre which includes a variety of sub genres. Thrillers are regarded as a very fast pace, attention grabber, thrilling plots and story lines. They tend to be regarded by their fast pace and narratives of protagonist and antagonist.


Thriller devices:

Thrillers have many devices that help to add to the Thrilling theme to make the filming more thrilling. Such as suspense, cliff hangers, red-herrings and McGuffins.

  • Redherring: A Redherring is when like a you think something but something different come out for example a person is having a dream of a friend in hospital and they wake up to touch them then they suddenly wake up but the person in hospital is still sleeping in the hospital bed.
  • McGuffin: The McGuffin is when the aspect in the movie that creates conflict, it may not be important to the story line but helps to set up the storyline. For example death.
  • Cliff-hanger: Cliff-hangers is when something Thrilling happens and then the scene changes so then we don't see what has happened. This usually happens at the end of a movie to show set up for a sequel.

Sub genres:


  • Psychological: Psychological is when psychological parts are used, the villain may be psychologically provoking the hero, the controversy tends to be emotional instead of physical for example Psycho
  • Conspiracy: Is when the hero is confronted by a group of large powerful people whose true power/form is only seen by the hero him/her themselves. (E.g. The Chancellor manuscript)
  • Crime: Crime thrillers are a combination of Thrilling parts based upon crime. (E.g. The matrix)

There are many more Thriller sub genres these are simple selects.

Thriller conventions:
Within Thriller movies there are conventions, conventions are the 'rules', and so be it that are followed allowing the movie to be classed as a Thriller. This ranges from specific camera work, characters, costume, setting, sound, editing and so on.
